Car Battery Replacement

Hey All,

My G is a 2005 coupe and is basically bone stock. I've recently noticed that it's been taking a second or so longer when cranking to start the car. My buddy's G was a 2003 or 2004 (also stock) and he had to replace his a year or two ago. When he did, he was told the OEM batteries don't last more than 5 years. I've got around 55k miles on my car now and it's hitting that 5 yr mark. I'm guessing the longer crank time means that my battery's on the downhill so I wanna make sure I get that replaced (if necessary) before I get stranded somewhere. Does anybody have any recommendations on brands or any advice? Also, should I change it myself? I remember reading somewhere before that it was a pain in da **** to change it yourself but I don't know if that's true or not. Thanks in advance...you guys are always a great source of info and feedback!

Chris

interstate or the yellow or red tops are your best bets. we recently had 3 gs that batt died all of them running the interstate batt now.

install is super easy if u have a screwdriver and a 10mm socket u can install it yourself.

Yellow top is great... Powers my car and my audio (1300 watts) great with no dimming or hesitation. YOu spend a lil more but will not be sorry....

Awesome! Thanks Kris! Any rhyme or reason as to Interstate vs the red or yellow tops?

So I found some posts on the yellow vs red tops...basically red is better for pure cranking and no audio upgrades while yellow is better if you're running an upgraded audio system? Thinking about getting the Optima Red Top as it sounds like it'll run for a very long time but I'm not sure how it compares to the Interstate and if it's worth the extra $100.

Haha...took me way too long to respond. Sorry, I'm at work...please disregard my last post. Looks like you answered it in this one! Thanks again!

I just (today) replaced mine with a Diehard Platinum P5 Group35. Cranks SO much faster. the P5 is a deep cycle staring battery, that uses AGM technology and is better than any optima battery (at least in my opinion, from the online research I've done). It has been selling under the name Odyssey Batteries for some time now, and now that sears is used them to produce the diehard line, they have been able to negotiate a lower price for them. I actually paid about $189+tax for it, whereas the Odyssey branded battery goes for 269+tax

Thanks for all the posts guys. So I guess my question that Kris kind of answered is "are these more expensive batteries really that much better?" I'm just wondering if you guys know how they compare to an Interstate battery that costs $90-$100 less than the red/yellow tops or the Optima/Diehard model you mentioned. If my car is stock, is it simply overkill if I bought the $200 battery or are there other added benefits to it that I don't get with my $100 one? I don't mind paying the $200 but I also don't want to buy something that does more than I'll ever be using (it's like buying a Ferrari and never going above 65mph). Is there a thread that compares all these batteries (life expectancy, crank time, used for stock vs audio system, etc.)?

I have the same battery in mine. I upgraded to it when I had my audio done.

Forgot about the Costco batteries. Probably one of your better bets if you're just looking to replace the stock battery.

Well, if I can get a longer lasting batter than the stock one that cranks better, I'm willing to pay the money. I'd prefer to get one that will last a very long time versus replacing one every five years.

I've figured what batteries to buy but my problem now is I'm relatively new to cars. got my first car which is a hand me down and giving me a lot of headache lately. I need to replace the battery and I want to learn how to do it myself. I saw this video about , I was wondering if it's the complete step or should I add something else? please advise
