wetsanding headlights after using 3m headlight restoration

There was a haze forming around the outside of my G35x headlights, so I bought the 3M headlight restoration kit to clean it up.
The kit includes a wheel that you attach to a household drill
The steps are as follows:
500grit sanding wheel
800grit
Trizac 3000grit wetsanding wheel
foam wave pad w/ 3M rubbing compound

after all this, the haze is gone. However, many small scratches are now on the headlight. Any recommendations on what grit sandpaper I can use to wetsand these small scratches away?

Bump. I need help here too.

I know you can get it polished and it will go away, but I want to do it myself...
Good luck

if they're very small and you can live with periodic maintenance on them, some wax or plast-x will fill in the scratches. i wet-sanded mine one of mine to get some very deep scratches out and was left with very fine scratches.

That grit selection has some pretty wide gaps 800 to 3000 is a big jump. Also rubbing from a 3000 as a final is a big jump. How to get rid of the scratches will depend on what grit left them.

i tried wetsanding with 1500grit between 800 and 3000. the deep scratches were removed but now the whole headlight is covered in very fine scratches, so it is hazy once again. I am considering using 2000-3000grit wetsanding to finish, then applying plast-x. think this will do the trick? I want a mirror finish. if it isn't possible, i may have to buy a new headlight. i should have left it alone in the first place.

Well it's hard to to tell but IMHO, one polish can get rid of 3000 scratches and get the lense clear again. Either the R compound is too harsh and you have those scratches to contend with or it was too light and you still have the 3000 scratches. YOu have any paint polishes around you can try? Like a swirl remover?

The other reason is are you using the drill attachment with the final polish? If you are doing this by hand, it might not be strong enough.

today i wetsanded with 2000grit, then buffed w/ drill with Meguiars Plast-X. This got it looking slightly better. I ordered 2500 and 3000grit sandpaper to see if that does anything. I'm hoping the 3000grit+rubbing compound will get the lens back to a mirror finish. If not, gotta look for a new lens. I hate hazy headlights (alliteration). I have Meguiars Scratch-X that I can try. I tried it yesterday on the 1500grit scratches and it didn't do much, but maybe it will do the trick now.

Get it clearcoated then it will be gone. This will prevent it coming back for much longer than having to wet sand periodically.

I also used the 3m kit and it left many scratches on my headlights which I shouldve left alone in the first place...

Anyways...I bought 2000 grit sand paper and wetsanded and polished with PlastX and it helped it out but there is still MANY scratches which are annoying the hell out of me...

If anyone has solved this issue please let me know what to do to help...sorry to bring back an old thread..

Try going to 2500 and 3000 grit, then polishing/waxing. I got good results with Meguiar's sandpaper. You can buy individual sheets online.
