F*$ sprayed acid-based cleaner on my rims and now stuck with acid stains

Before goin into the car wash the other day, after DRIVING my car hard on the way over i sprayed Meguires Hot Wheels cleaner on my rims. As i sprayed it on i started to notice a smell, like the product was being burned by the hot brakes. Took it through the car wash and had the guy wipe the wheels down. After scrubbing for a while i realized these marks were not coming off. Is this because i sprayed this **** on to a DRY, HOT wheel? **** so pissed. Can goo gone or some kind of degreaser take these stains away???

the wheels will need to be refinished. Had the same problem with a set 19" coupe wheels.

Yeah I think its sort of like the primer under the wheel finish, so as you discovered when you see that it means the finish is rubbed away. Unless you wanna get them professionally refinished its time to start thinking of other things you can do with a spray can.

forgive me if I sound naive but are you not supposed to spray wheel cleaner on hot wheel? I obviously wouldn't spray it on after driving for a distance but sometimes I am forced to wash my car in the sun when it is my only opportunity to do so and the wheels can get a little warm since I do the wheels after the body is washed completely. Opinions? Mixx35 you got me worried now

Pics of your wheels might help us come up with a solution short of having to get them refinished.

Did you try good polish? Non-abrasive?

I have never used anything but good car washing soap and water on my wheels and they look like the day the car was new.

Never had a problem with them, and never had to worry about this kinda crap.

Don't know why guys spend money on this stuff. If you keep your wheels reasonably clean and don't go years between cleanings soap and water work just fine.

Nearly 7 year old wheels below.

you probobly used the Red Meguiars wheel cleaner didnt ya? Its meant for chrome wheels and the chemicals inside LOVE to eat away at wheel clear coat and eat the paint so good your only option is refinishing the wheels. Next time use the Purple Meguiars wheel cleaner which is an all purpose wheel cleaner meant for multiple wheels. I use them on all the Volks i've had.

I did the same exact thing the day I bought my used G. I detailed my car and, in classic fashion (for me) fixed the car until I broke it. I sprayed the same exact product on my wheels, but my wheels weren't hot. I don't think it makes a difference whether the wheels are hot or not.

I thought the wheels were chrome. They are actually aluminum, with a coat of black paint, and then a coat of chrome-colored paint. What you are seeing is the black paint showing through. The solvent ate through the chrome paint.

Sorry man. I've spent dozens of hours trying to fix this problem. I finally bought jack stands, took all 4 wheels off, and stripped the paint completely off of the aluminum. They actually look pretty nice like that. But I also took a wire brush attachment to my drill and polished them up.

Right now, my rims look better than OEM with the metal all polished up. However, if I could have all those hours back that it took, I'd rather have that.

If you want any more details on my saga, just ask.

Never heard of a product that could do that to your wheels lol... should check out the care and detailing section next time before using a product that you're unsure of on your car lol.

I've always used Eagle One all purpose wheel cleaner along with good car washing soap. Then applied a coat of wheel wax on it afterwards.

^looks like it ate through the clear. I use the all wheel cleaner. But also you shouldn't leave it on more than 20 seconds at most. Refinishing for all 4 wheels is prob about 300-400.00

Don't think that's a result of the product. I've used that before.

The dealer was nice enough to do that to my wheels. THEN offered to sell me some new ones!!! They claimed to never use any chemicals on their wheels...after calling their preferred wheel refinishing guy, his words "Yeah, they have to stop using acid on their wheels."

Needless to say, they're going to pay for the refinishing.
