G35 6MT - Transmission Rattle?!

I have a 2004 G35 Sendan - 6 speed M/T. The car has just 6,000 miles on it and we really love the car! We got it fully loaded and got the aero package and ground effects - its a real looker! But we have a problem...

When I shut the car down, the very LAST noise that comes from the engine/transmission is a loud RATTLE. I never heard another Inifity make this noise so I became concerned! I took it into the dealership and they kept it for 10 days while Inifity Engineering came and looked at it. By this time, I was getting worried! They then told me that there are five others in the country that are doing the same thing. The others are also 6MT's.

I followed-up with them this week and now they are telling me that this loud rattle is "CHARACTERISTIC" of some G35 6MT's - problem here, I have NEVER heard another make this noise. Other problem is, if I were buying this car from an owner and heard the noise I would RUN. This in turn, kills the value of the car. It ONLY happens with you turn the car off and the clutch is DISENGAGED. I am thinking about lemon law (an attorney said it does sound like it will fit for lemon law) assuming Infinity cant show examples of others that make this rattle upon shut down.

Anyone else have a 6MT - it can be a coupe or sedan like mine (same transmission) that makes this noise??? HELP!

First of all, it's Infiniti, not Infinity.

Yes, the 6MT can sometimes be a noisy tranny - all variety of noises in fact. Use the search feature here and you'll see. Once you read what others here have heard/experienced, you'll likely feel a little better.

You mention nothing about performance, only noise. Unless the car has performance issues or puts your safety in danger, it's unlikely that you'll recover anything under the Lemon Law. You'll likely pay your lawyer more than any repair would cost trying.

Did it make this rattle when you were test driving? It likely did, and you were too excited to notice. The G has that effect on people. I doubt seriously, with the reputation this 6MT has for creaks and croaks, that it started doing it right after you drove off the lot.

Read a bit here about guys with noisy trannys - they growl and groan and occasionally clatter, but overall they perform as advertised and communicate the power of the driveline very effectively into the palm of your right hand.

How is the car performing?

Apparently the throwout bearing rattles when you turn off the car and the clutch is not pushed in. Mine does it all the time, if you notice a rattle when the clutch is pushed to the floor then I might worry. Also, the tranny/clutch seems to clatter a bit when you take off from a stop in first. From my readings all this appears to be characteristic of this tranny and is normal.

Lol - Spelling INFINITI wrong in an Infiniti forum - good for me right?

The car has ABSOLUTELY no performance issues. It runs and drives like a charm. It does, however, only get "ok" gas mileage even when pampering it (19/20). The only other problems we have had is a constant pull to the right, in which 3 attempts to repair finally worked. (New tensioner rod, 2 new tires, 2 alignments and something else)

We bought the G35 to replace a 2002 Nissan Altima SE-V6 so yes, we were overly excited and I do think it was making that noise from day one. Either we were excited or I was holding the clutch in.

My friend/attorney said in Florida it would hold up due to the following note in the Florida Lemon Law: ...substantially impar the use, value or safety of the vehicle...

To tell you the truth, if I can just hear another 6MT make this noise I would be done and satisfied!! We love the car and really do not want it to go away. But if you were to see the service managers face when he first heard the noise, you too would be a little scared! I mean, its a loud rattle and no other 6MT makes this noise (that I have heard yet).

BTW - this is a great site, I am so glad I found it. I just need to figure out how to post a picture of my car..

Don't worry to much about the MPG, 19/20 is pretty good for a new car. I have 4000 miles on mine and I'm only getting around 21/22 combined hwy/city, only IF I drive it like a granny. But with this car it's pretty hard to contain yourself from doing a few WOT runs, which just kills the MPG.

Well that is why we bought it - its a 4 door car that we can load the family in and it has the power when you need it. You are right, its hard to contain yourself sometimes. My other half drives a 2005 Corvette Coupe 1SB and though its much faster, the G35 still gets the same amount of looks because people do not expect a 4 Door car to perform the way it does. Hopefully the MPG will improve as it gets broken in. We bought it back in December and only put 6,000 miles on it, but we are starting to drive it more now that we sold our Conversion Van (a real Gas sucker!).

Thanks to all for your posts about the rattle in the transmission when shutting the car off. I am picking the car up in an hour or so and I feel MUCH better hearing it from other owners.

Now I found an awesome site too that I am going to join fully as the pictures of G35's with rims are priceless when choosing the right rim/tire package!!!

If there are no performance issues, I wouldn't sweat it.

The more you read here, the better you'll feel. The 6MT drivetrain has been discussed hundreds of times over (not kidding). It usually rears its head in much the same fashion were seeing here - a new owner hears something odd and thinks "what the heck is that?"

Your Infiniti guy was probably shocked because not all dealers deal with it. The car makes noises - plain and simple. Some folks take 'em to service and find out all is well, others do research for themselves and find all is well - service never comes into play. Who knows?

I have no doubt you got a great car - most likely with some sort of the trademark growl this 6MT is known and mostly loved for. As for the Lemon Law deal - the first thing you have to do is prove that the value of the car is impacted. With no performance issues I bet that would be hard to do.

Congrats on a great car - I'd be interested to hear a comparison between the new G and your old V6 Altima. Those babies are pretty quick in their own right.

Look forward to the pics

I have the same noise when shutting down my car.

My last car WAS a lemon and was bought back from me by the manufacturer.

This car and it's downright-scary transmission noise (one of many rattles and bothersome quirks) is not anywhere even remotely close to being a lemon. It sounds bad, yes, but it takes nothing away from the driveability, safety, or quality of the vehicle.

PS - Attorneys and Lemon Law don't mix... at least, not until it's time to show up in court. There is a great system out there that is way more successful and way less expensive (read: free) than attorneys, the BBB's Autoline program.

I used an attorney at first then fired her when I got tired of her writing very expensive letters on my behalf that only half explained the problem, never getting anywhere CLOSE to a resolution, before she decided it was time to start the bewildering, time consuming, and expensive litigation process. At that point I took matters into my own hands and the manufacturer agreed to buy back the car within 2 weeks of my complaint being filed through the correct channels. With the attorney still in tow, I'd have lost a good third of the buyback settlement - an attractive $6.5k, of which 100% fit snugly into my OWN pocket.

Thanks all for the feedback. I feel MUCH better and have picked the car up today from service. Someone asked about a comparrison of my V6 Altima to the G35. Well, to start, both cars are manual transmissions. Altima was a 5 speed.

The Altima's quirks are as follows:

1. HIGH TORQUE STEER! Oh my God, you better hang onto that wheel when you take off. The Altima V6 should have been RWD - no doubt!
2. LESS THAN QUALITY INTERIOR! It felt like a "cheap" car inside. You only felt the real quality when you drove it!
3. NO SIDE AIRBAGS OR ABS! Not in the one we got anyways.
4. NO STABILITY CONTROL! You better really be careful in the rain - living in Florida, this is a crucial to have, especially if you drive fast like us.

The main reason we traded out of our Altima was to get a better car, RWD, and more safety features. The quirk about the G35 I have, besides the strange noise is the short gear ratio. I love 6 speed in our 05 Corvette, but the G35 is geared too short. I think the 5speed in the Altima was easier to drive...

Just my thoughts..

The sound you describe is completely normal for a G35 6MT. Mine does it too, and it's no problem whatsoever. In fact, it's characteristic of most, if not all, RWD manual transmissions. I don't think it's the clutch throwout bearing; I think it's inside the gearbox (input shaft or lay shaft?). If you think the G35 tranny is noisy, you should have heard my Miata.

Learn to enjoy the sounds your 6MT makes. Drive around with the windows down and listen to those gears, shift forks, and syncros go to work. Then watch some Grand Am Rolex Cup road racing on TV and listen to those cars and you'll recognize that your car makes some of the same sounds, just a whole lot quieter. It sounds awesome.

The Altima won't make the same sounds even if it has a manual transmission because it's WWD (Wrong Wheel Drive).
