My dealer used Valvoline Maxlife in my transmission.

Hi all. New member here. Just wanted to post my experience with my 2004 G35X 150K miles. Went to a Nissan dealer asking for a repair on the abs slip vdc awd light problem. Was told by the tech it was a bad wheel speed sensor and he also stated that I had a bad wheel bearing and hub. While I was there I asked if he can do the ATF service with genuine nissan fluids. He suggested I get a flush. I agreed. Fast forward a week and I take a look at the work order and I see that the ATF service was done with Valvoline Maxlife ATF fluid and not the Nissan fluid that my car takes. I assumed that when I asked for the oem nissan J fluid I was going to get oem nissan fluid. I called the dealer and asked to speak with the service manager. I talked to him in a very polite manner and expressed my concerns about the fluid they used vs the nissan fluid that the manual says I should only be using. After he explained that the Valvoline fluid should be ok he made an appointment to get the fluid exchanged for the nissan fluid the car takes. I asked how much it would cost me knowing that I might end up paying the difference on the nissan fluid, he said it would not cost me anything. I have the appointment 2 days from now and will post the outcome then.

Is this an FYI for us? If so, thanks bro!

Or are you asking us if this might have caused damage to your transmission? - Most likely not since you didn't drive your car for long. (Unless if you have a lead foot and were racing ever ricer you saw on the road)

You should be receiving Nissan Matic S, J is no longer made. Should be around 11 to 12 quarts.

Thanks for the replies. I posted as an FYI and to get your thoughts on my situation with the actual trans itself. I also think that there has been no damage to the transmission as it has been a week and not driving it ***** out. I have only put 160 miles on it since the flush. Maybe someone who has had this situation can learn from what I've gone thru.

Valvoline site specifically states it is a replacement and they guarantee it.

I would personally not be too concerned with the type of fluid as much as the fact that a flush was done on a 150K mile trans....unless you have done regular flushes.

you don't have to run Nissan Matic J/S, there are other fluids that fall in the same range that are just as good, if not better. i wouldn't worry as long as what they put in, states that it's an appropriate alternative.

AMSOIL Recommentations

Being a AMSOIL customer I was doing some research wondering if I could use there AT fluid in my Infiniti. At the end under recommendations it clearly states owners of Infinities with ATs should use OE fluid. That tells you something when the best producer of synthetic fluids world wide recommends something other than there product....Gary

Where are you seeing that Gary? As far as I can see, it clearly states that they have an application for Nissan Matic J

Valvoline states it meets the requirements for Matic J/S. I have been running Valvoline Maxxlife since for 41K miles now, have not had any issues with my transmission. I push my car pretty hard and use manual mode quite often. I've had my fluid flushed every 30K. When I went in for my 60K flush, I was freaking out when I saw they replaced it with Valvoline, but went with it. At 90K they put in Valvoline again. Fast forward to today with 101K, my transmission still shifts just like when I got it with 19K.

if the manual states that use matic J only and the dealer has used something else (other than matic S since J is replaced by it) then you have a good case to get a replacement in case your high mileage transmission craps out on you.

If dealerships can deny you warranty based on the type of fluid you used then you sure as hell can use this as leverage in case your trasnmission craps out on you. I'd keep those emails/documents in a safe place if that happens in the future.
