Question What type of gas is the VQ designed for?

I have been putting 91 in my 06 sedan since I got it last month as that's what I read on here and was told at the dealer. My mom bought an 02 Maxima back in 2002 and the dealer told her to use regular 87 so that's what she's been using for the past 10 years. Now I also drove an 02 maxima before I got my G and I used 87 too. My mother's Maxima ran without knocking or any problems for the past 10 years, albeit it only has 75k miles on it. My question is why would our G's require premium while maxima that also have a VQ only use 87?

I use 93 and have for the 7 years I have owned my G. If u don't it won't hurt your car, but in the long run it will cause more problems then normal.Your better off spending the extra few dollars when u fill up.

Im pretty sure on 03-06's it says that premium is recommended on the gas door, where as the newer G's say premium is required. Ive put 91 in mine since I've bought it, its only a couple cents difference so why not just use the 91.

I fill up 93 when I can, but a lot of gas stations near my place only go up to 91. I'll always fill premium, but my questions is why does the Maxima use regular while we use premium?

02 max is the same VQ35, should still put 91 in.

You'll only lose performance putting less than 91 in, if you switch back and forth often it may knock.

i dont think VQ is the reason for regular or premium..

i believe it's the compression/fuel mapping/programming, etc...

all due to performance, efficiency, environmental reasons

on my 97 and 99 maxima, the manual and inside the gas lid it said premium fuel was recommended for best performance, I'm pretty certain its the same for the 5th gen maxima.

Theres a hundred threads on this exact topic on Maxima.org if you guys really desire to know.

lied to you? not so much, I can't imagine your mother gives a crap about performance, I'm sure the dealer said "87 is fine" -due to being a salesman.

.. but Nissan recommends 91 for all of their performance v6s.

2002 or all maximas with a VQ are suppose to run on 91 octane. It's in the owners manual! You are to use lower octane if its the only available! I had a 2002 SE. Normal people who don't really care about there VQ equipped car run it on Regular. it's only like $3 difference on fill up and you net a little bit better MPG
