clunking/noise from the passenger front wheel

Hello Everyone !!
I had posted a while ago about the annoying noise I have which sounds like it is coming from the passenger front wheel. It has been getting louder.. When you are driving slowly over small bumps, it rattles like crazy !! If you lightly touch the brakes, it seems to stop...
Anyway, I thought perhaps it was: 1) loose caliper or pads.. I changed the brakes.. still have the noise. 2) thought it was "loose nuts" on the strut as someone here suggested. I tightened the nuts, but I still have the sound. 3) perhaps lower stab bar links... I replaced both links, however, still have the sound. 4) I thought that perhaps the strut or upper mount was bad.. I replaced the struts today (mounts seemed good) and I STILL have the noise !!. (With 78K on the car, I thought that it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the struts anyway.. 5) I read somewhere that there are several nuts under the hood cowl that may need tightening.. I checked and all were tight !!

When I was changing the struts, I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with the other suspension parts (excessive play in the joints..) I was reading on this site that perhaps the lower control arm bushings could be bad/broken. How can I check these ?
Are there any other likely reasons for the noise ? I'm suspecting now that perhaps it is the lower control arm, as when I press the brake, it would pull the wheel back a bit and that may be why the noise goes away..
Anyway.. I'm starting to get frustrated by just throwing new parts at my G...

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Regards,

Rod.

I would have to go with the upper strut mounts as well, i have had issues with these in the past on various cars...

Thanks to everyone for the replies... I had thought that perhaps it was the upper strut mount as I also have had issues with macpherson struts on other cars, however, the G is different as there is no bearing that can go bad.. The strut doesn't have to turn with the spindle like other macpherson strut cars. I decided to wait until I had it apart to check it out.. they both looked fine... Another reason I decided to wait on buying/replacing the upper mounts is that I couldn't find any through aftermarket sources.. only Nissan.. That leads me to believe that they don't go bad that often. (otherwise I imagine the aftermarket guys would be selling them..)

Anyway.. it looks like Blue Dream hit the nail on the head !! After hearing the noise again after changing the struts, (and starting this thread) I decided to yank all the suspension stuff out to figure out that the issue was (I'm nothing if not determined !! (and maybe long winded...) turns out that it's the compression rod ball joint... I will order and change out both sidess... One other question though... how do I get the end of the compression rod off the long bolt (that attaches to the frame) ?? Just brute force ????
Oh.. one other thing.. as I was changing out my struts, I couldn't get the bolt out of one of the rear struts.. seems it's seized on the spacer inside the rubber bushing. I didn't want to really yank on it and tear out the rubber bushing in the rear spindle..As such.. I only changed out 3 of the 4 struts !! Any ideas around how I can get it to come loose ??? Figures.. it's always the last one that gives you grief !!!..

Thanks again...

Regards,

Rod.

I vote for compression rod bushings also. If you've never had these replaced, your overdue. Do a search on here and find the TSB.

I also have that clunking sound on the drivers side and is driving me nuts!, I just replaced the compression rod and the noise still kicking, I was thinking about the lower control arm bushings or the strut mount, do you guys know where can I get the strut mounts at a good price? thanks..

ok the clunk noise on my G wasn't the upper strut mount it was the compression rod that was bad which was clunking and creaking, it also fixed my vibration on the highway going over 110kmh or 65mph

hey Rod2005! i can share your pain.. i had serious clunky noise coming from my driver side. i had grant (does work here in SD) check it out.. visually nothing seemed wrong. my issue was it seemed like it came from the actual suspension. it almost seemed like the nut that hold down the upper strut mount was loose and spring was getting some play.

i ended buying a upper strut mount for like 35 bucks.. which i never used (if you wanna buy it let me know, 20 bucks shipped to you as long as ur in the states) anyhow. as i read on in your post i noticed u said u completely changed the pass side suspension and the noise was still there!

visually the endlink seemed good (endlink hold down on your swaybar) its this part

so i didnt replace that. i drove home with the same issue my last resort was to take it to the dealer.. which i knew they wouldnt look at my suspension parts because im like 3inches dropped. but to my surprise they did look at it and found the solution! which as you may already know was the front endlinks.. they were worn out.

so this 'could' be your issue.. not sure if you replaced this part (you didnt name the endlinks) but it could be. others have also mentioned the bushing in your control arm which it could be... the control arm is the thing that holds your strut (i assume you know this) you should check where it begins as it may have snapped off and its not intact and it moves (i heard this happens)..
i hope your issue gets fixed.. i know how you feel... the noise sucks especially if you have people in your ride.. made me feel like i had a POS beater

report back to us with your findings! and pm me if you need the upper strut mount.

Sounds like that's the ball joint issue (there are two on each side). I have the same noise on my passenger's side and already replaced the endlinks.. Next step is replacing the ball joints Could also be the tie rod..

Damn I hated that creaking coming from the loose compression rod ball joints... almost drove me crazy. Luckily I took it to the dealer in time and had it fixed under warranty but don't know if you're still covered or not.
