Strange whistling sound when accelerating

Well, I picked up my beautiful '06 IP 6MT coupe yesterday. About 150 kms in and I'm not sure if it just started now or I am just noticing it, but I now notice a strange whistling sound coming from driver's side somewhere whenver I accelerate. It appears loudest at 3 - 4k RPM in second gear.....if I keep it around that range the whistling is constant. It's sort of a high pitched whistling. I don't know what it is - anyone experience this?

If driving in silence, this can get very annoying....

Saw this on the other board, could it be?

Hey. I think I know what youre talking about and I think I have it too. Might just be the intake, or I might just be stupid. It doesnt bother me, the exhaust note overwhelms it

Is the whistling sound go away when you lower the windows? or open your sunroof? This is a common problem with the G35 Coupe; "excessive wind noise" and replacing the door seal and/or the front pillar finisher will take care of the problem.
Take your car back to the Infiniti dealer.

Is it only when it it cold out? For the first few minutes after starting to drive? If so there is another thread about that topic. No answers but I believe 'misery loves company'

I had the same thing, I took it to the dealer 3 times, they hear it but can't figure it out. We ruled everything out, intake leaks, exhaust whistle, tranny, bearings, wind. I just decided to live with it. It is clearly documented at the dealer, so if it ever turns out to be a more serious issue, warranty will cover it.

But seriously. The whistle-type noise is your intake. The whine you might hear, for instance if you're in first gear with the clutch disengaged and are coming to a stop, that is the tranny.

High performance cars transmissions need not whine. When you're watching something like WRC or European Touring Car races, the reason you're hearing the transmission whine is because the transmission synchros in those vehicles are straight-splined, hence the high-pitched whine. Its a helluva lot easier to shift a straight-splined transmission without worrying about wasting precious time using a clutch.

Vehicles that are consumer-centric have synchros whose splines are angled (like the impellers within a supercharger). This decreases noise and smooths the shifting of the transmission. Can you imagine how annoying a whiny rally transmission would be if it was your daily driver?

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I am pretty certain it isn't anything to do with door/sunroof air leak issues. I lowered the window and above the traffic noise i'm PRETTY sure I still heard the faint whistle (it's not super loud or anything). Not sure if the cold brings it out (heck it's always cold here).

It is also not the whining tranny I am referring to (that is a cool sound - would not complain ) But this sound is.....whistling...sorta higher pitched. When accerlating and in constant speed. Also, does not whistle while in neutral, only with gas depressed..

Some of you talk about the intake - but it this because of a leak in the intake (which I should get it looked into) or just air rushing into intake (in which I can't do much about it...)
