Removing Rear Window Tint

Every tint place I call says it is a big pain on the G Coupe. Hard to reach corners, and glue residue.

Anyone done this without damaging the defrosters?

Re: Removing Rear Window Tint

A reputable tint shop shouldn't have a problem with removing the rear tint and they won't damage the defrosters. Just remember you get what you pay for.

Re: Removing Rear Window Tint

Is it a pain in the ***? Removal of all film and residue from the rear glass is though......it's not just a problem w/ the coupe. If it's done right, there shouldn't be any damage to the defroster. We do a lot of redos of other companies' jobs and we have never had any defroster damage. Search out a professional place in your area. By the way, can you tell us why you are having this redone?

Re: Removing Rear Window Tint

Once, on a Prelude I had, they removed the rear glass to do the tint. Would that be common to do on the coupe? I hate going back there just to clean the inside of the glass. I can't imagine having to work tint in there.

Re: Removing Rear Window Tint

I bought a 2 year old coupe, that has 2% light transmittance tints. Can't see anything at night unless it has bright headlights turned on.

Re: Removing Rear Window Tint

When I was on the BMW boards this was a common question because you were not allowed to have tint if you attended the Driver's Schools. I would recommend searching for the exact steps to my explanation, but the basics are that you start by having the car window sit in the sun to have it get as warm as possible. Generously spray an ammonia-based window cleaner like Windex (normally a no-no with tint). Then get a black plastic trash bag and place against the window with the Windex and let sit. I think the trash bag helps to warm up the adhesive while the Windex breaks it down and weakens it. The film should just peel off after that. Like I said, you might want to search around some other forums to get the exact steps and I cannot say if the Windex will harm the defroster at all. Also, don't forget to fold down the seat if you can, makes working back there MUCH easier.

Re: Removing Rear Window Tint

Removing tint is easy. Whatever you do do NOT scrape with a razor blade on the defroster bars or they will not work. I had an old 240sx that I ruined some of the defroster bars like that on before learning the right way to do it.

Like someone else said, take an ammonia based cleaner, the stronger the better. Spray a nice fine mist all over the tint. Take a black trash bag and cut it open so it covers more. On the inside of the window stick the trash bag to the window, since it's all wet with cleaner it will adhere nicely. Park in the sun for about an hour. The tint should just literally peel off like a big sticker. Then there is some adhesive to remove, use whatever works for that. It might be easier to get at the corners of the window if you take out the trim/speaker covers so you just have bare metal back there. You will get a bit more room at least. Helped on my old 240sx at least. Anyways that's it. Easy. Defroster will work fine.

Looks good.......

All the postings here look good......follow the procedures they gave you with
windex/trash bag/leave in the sun.....it's really easier than you think once
you get started. I would however put towels under the plastic bags since
you don't want anything sitting on your upolstery that's wet. Good Luck!
