passing CA SMOG with twin turbo?

Anyone know if I stand a chance at passing a California smog test with a JWT twin turbo under the hood of my g35? The guy that put it in (Scott Bush/Relentless Auto) seemed iffy about me passing and explained why but this was 5 years ago and I remember **** all.

And if I do fail, how screwed am i?

The smog is due in about 2 weeks. Any feedback would be much appreciated. I also have Borla exhaust, not sure how much bearing that has on emissions.

are you running downpipes or cats? if you put cats on you might be okay but the excess heat from the turbos will cause them to fail pretty soon, especially if you are in boost most of the time.

Hey. Thanks for responding. No idea what downpipes or cats are though. Total noob here

I did some googling and I'm pretty sure I'll fail the visual either way, as the JWT turbo isn't CARB legal.

My friends uncle owns a smog station and will probably turn a blind eye on the visual, but I doubt he'll help me pass the sniffer.

But I read California is doing away with the sniffer test soon anyway, starting in 2013 right? My reg renewal and smog is due Nov 15th. I was thinking I could just wait it out till the 1st of the new year and then get it done. My reg will expire for those 6 weeks but I have a 2nd car I could just drive in the meantime.

Good idea or no?

gl finding someone to pay to pass.

if its not carb legal, chances are you are gonna fail.

most smog techs i've been to actually know what to look for. and i gave up most engine mods because of that.

i had an evo however that managed to pass with quite a few mods. fully built 2.3 stroker with o2 housing, aftermarket cams, 1000cc injectors, and full exhaust (temporary cat)

ripped the stickers off the injectors, wrapped the o2 housing with a heatshield, and painted anything that looked shiny flat black. the engine bay looked stock, and it helped me pass visual, and despite having the stroker motor, with cams and such, it managed to pass sniffer as well. i walked out of that smog shop feelin like a boss.

it's not till 2013, and from what I read they just do an OBD II test instead of the sniffer. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing? Any idea what the OBD II would have to say about my turbo?

is it really that hard to find a place that'll pass it in LA? I can live with shelling out 300 bucks.

guess I'll just take it in for a dry run and go from there.

thanks for the responses

i read that they won't even bother with visual. just plug it in and check for codes.

although you can still be pulled over and have your hood popped if you have shiny stuff.

G35 DRIVER isn't the place to discuss paying off a Smog station so you can pass. Did you really expect us to give you a location or name so the SMOG **** can come calling? NTFB

You will have to find someone to help you pass.

not like you'd have any issue passing smog with your mods.

My smog station doesn't care about anything but the sniffer test. By installing my OE cats and driving for at least 25 miles to heat them up I easily pass. I've offered them CARB stickers for the Stillen intake when I ran that and they declined....it's all about the sniffer test results.

I actually never asked for that, and I only commented on the idea of paying someone off after someone else brought it up. Thanks though.
