Cool Not overly excited about the vortech after it was done being tuned

Just got my car back today after being tuned and i have to say not really over excited about the out come. guess i was expecting more then what it is. I'm running the tuner kit w up rev 440cc injectors. tuner said i'm pushing 380 rwh at 7 pounds.. hasn't been 24 hrs and already thinkin of upgrading. my question is should i do the bigger pulley? it just doesn't seem like it's not makin power till like 5500 to 6500 rpm it pulls like a bi**h up top but nothing in the mid or low end. is the car safe at the next step if i'm not drag racing just lookin for a little more? can anyone help please let me know

what size pulley are you using? based on the psi, it sounds like you're running the 3.33" pulley. a bunch of people are 'safely' running the 3.12" and 2.87" pulley so you should make the jump if you're unsatisfied with your power level. most folks opt for 510-600cc injectors when running the 2.87" pulley, however.

as for not feeling anything until 5500 rpm, adjust the screw on your bypass valve. the stock setting doesn't allow the valve to close (ie allow you to start boosting) until you're around zero vacuum. set the screw so that only 6-7 screws are showing and you'll start building boost a little sooner.

the vortech FAQ thread over on my350z has a bunch of very useful information. many people have gone through what you're experiencing now.

Vortech SC does not give any low end boost.

Also, 380rwh are GOOD numbers based on the rev-up kit with stock pulley (3.12) although the boost should be around 8psi, not 7psi. Did your tuner do a boost leak check?

also, what cats are you running? the stock cats will limit power somewhat - i saw a 20rwhp boost from going from stock cats to hi-flow Fast Intentions cats on my set-up. Made a huge difference plus the tune was much smoother.

Just remember, any change you make (pulley, exhaust), you'll need a new tune.

you bought a supercharger... You won't have any low end boost

Also keep in mind a 3.12 pulley on the non-rev kit doesn't equate to a 3.12 pulley on the rev-up kit. Each system has slightly different gearing etc...

A 3.12 pulley on the rev-up is an 8 pound pulley while a 3.12 pulley on the non-rev-up is a 10 pound pulley.

If you are on a stock block you won't want more power than that unless you intend on blowing a hole through the side of your block. Also you can try upgrading your pulley.

I agree that 380whp is a great result. However, there are a lot of folks safely making over 400hp on the vortech tuner kit. Check out the builds on my350z.com. I'd be far more wary of introducing nitrous to the mix than i would be of installing a smaller supercharger pulley for more boost. Too much torque is a valid concern (that's the issue with N2O and turbos), but even at 400hp on the vortech you'll still be mid 300s in torque.

I have a Vortech SC'd '07. pushing 406whp/318wtq # boost. Also, have Stillen headers, JWT cams, CAI and Bassani exhaust and still running EOM cats. When we first dyno'd the engine, it pushed 418whp so we dialed it back to 401whp but after the 1K break in period, we re-dyno'd the engine and it naturally pulled the 406/WHP. The car comes on about 4K RPM because of the new cams. The bottom end agreed isn't great but after 4K it's a rocket. In CA, to pass smog, it's only Vortech that is C.A.R.B. approved. I have a master tuner working on my car, Z-Car Garage here in San Jose, I don't touch it. My build is featured on their web site, in their BLOG section in Sept of '09. So, you can easily push to over 400/whp done right. The car is my DD and I push it as often as I can. Do your DD and you'll figure it out. Good Luck.

with the exception of adjusting the set screw, leave the bypass valve alone. ppl swap them out when they want a different sound. headers are up to you, but most ppl don't think its worth it unless you're doing other exhaust breather mods (cams AND test pipes AND freer flowing exhaust).
