Oil change??? recommended oil (Mobil1), filter, interval, dealer/shop, price

I wanted to get all the recommended info for a 2008 G35x oil change.
I'm going with Mobil 1 as I plan to own the car for a LONG time and I hear it frequently referred to as the best oil available.

Should I do any standard oil changes and why? What mileage(s)?
At what mileage should I start running synthetic and why?
What oil filter is recommended when running Mobil 1 in a 2008 G35x?
What is the recommended mileage interval between Mobil 1 changes?
Is their any advantage of having the dealer do the oil change over a shop?
What is the best price for an oil change from a dealer? A shop? What's included?
What is the cheapest price for Mobil 1 and where do I get it?

The Infiniti dealer said they use 5.3 quarts of standard Mobil 5w-30 oil and a Nissan oil filter (Part #15208-65F0C {$8.33}) every 3,750 miles for $50.00 (car wash included). Synthetic oil changes cost $100.00 and they STILL recommend changes every 5,000 miles.

Pep Boys quoted $50 for Mobil1 oil change with a Mobil1 filter.
Walmart quoted $24 for Penzoil oil change and $50 for Mobil1 oil change using a Fram filter on both.
Jiffy Lube doesn't even have Mobil1.

I just switched to synthetic on my 15K mile service. I used the standard dino oil the dealer puts in for the first three oil changes on 3750 mile intervals. After changing over to synthetic, I switched to maintenance schedule 2, which is at intervals of 7500 miles. I could probably run the synthetic longer (10K to 15K miles) but I don't want to void my warranty. The reason I waited 15K miles, I figured that would be more than enough miles to allow for engine break in before switching to synthetic. Because when running a synthetic oil you have almost zero wear. I've heard of people moving to synthetic at 3750 miles, and you probably can, just make sure you break the engine in with dino oil first.

I'm using the Purolator PureOne oil filter, I think it cost me around 5 bucks at Autozone. I just did my oil change and the book says 5.125 quarts I put in 5 quarts and the dipstick reads full. I'm using Royal Purple 5W-30 and I paid $7.25 a quart, I think Mobil 1 is a little cheaper.

Although Mobil 1 is a good oil, it's far from the best oil available.

Take a look at Royal Purple oil. Better than Mobil 1. That's what I'm running with a Mobil 1 filter.

I use Amsoil, Wix filter (though I might use the Amsoil one next time) and change every 6250 miles. That's an odd number because it happens to be 10,000km and that's a convenient way for me to remember - change it on the 10's.

Oh, and DIY so you know it's done right and it should only cost you 40 bucks.

The Mobil 1 and K&N filters are equally as good as the Amsoil filters and cost alot less. I use Amsoil oil and Mobil 1 filters.

Your basing this on what scientific data? Mobil 1 is actually a far superior oil to RP especially for extended drain intervals. RP breaks down much too quickly for extended drain intervals.

Many manufacturers put Mobil 1 in their cars at the factory

My S4 had synthetic from the factory and my wife's MB E350 had Mobil 1 from the factory. So, I am going to follow the same intervals on the G 35.

I switched to Mobil 1 0W - 40 on the S4 at 5k miles, no need to wait. Audi recommends changing at 10k intervals, I use 5k. MB uses 10 to 12k and Porsche uses 15k. There are those who are **** enough to send a sample to Blackstone Labs for them to check it out. They do this for about $20 - $30. They may recommend increasing or decreasing change intervals.

One last thought, I stopped using Jiffy Lube (and other quick change places) because they made me nervous. The dealer can mess up simple things as well, but for some reason, I feel more comfortable using them.

The cost of the oil at $5.50 per quart aint cheap (especially when you pour 7 qts at a time) but with the close tolerances and the high temps in these cars, synthetic is a no brainer for me.

Mobil 1 is good, but their current formula differs from the Mobil 1 they were selling maybe 5 yrs ago. The original Mobil 1 synthetic formula is more similar to the Mobil 1 rated for 15,000 miles.

Costco just had a great sale on Mobil 1. 6 quarts for about $21 w/ their $8 off coupon.

As for intervals, just follow mfg's recommendation per your owner's manual. 3750 miles or 7500 miles depending on you driving style and conditions.

Even if you drive the crap out of your car, 10k with Mobil 1 will be absolutely fine. If you plan on going longer, I would send in a sample at the 11k mark just to be on the safe side, but I've never seen a bad oil sample from any VQ35 engine that couldn't go 10k with either Mobil 1, Mobil 1 EP, Amsoil or Redline. RP seems to have problems going 4-5k in the VQ.

What Mobil 1 should I ask for? I don't know about the numbers. 0-30,5-20 etc? Just for best performance and protection for normal daily driving.

Lot of questions....!

You really can't go wrong using Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil. I won't shop there but
Wall Mart probably has the best price unless you can find it on add at Kragen
or one of the other leading auto parts stores. Oil filters, I use K&N because I
like there products and I can buy them on line cheaper than any where else.
I have a friend with an auto shop, he lets me use his rack for oil changes.
It's kind DYI with help! The manual says to use 5W/30, stick with that!
Intervals, again go with what the manual says. It's cheap insurance using
quality synthetic oil/filter and great for your engine/car and you can start
using after 1K miles....

I'm not here to get into a pissing match over oil. I was merely making a suggestion. You can find page after page about which is best for what type of driving and under what conditions, etc. I based my selection on the advice of friends who have been in the performance industry for 30+ years. You go with research (hopefully independent); I'll go with experience.
