G35 vs SS camaro

My friend got his 01 SS camaro a few weeks ago and he has been buggin me about running it vs my coupe so heres the story.

I get a call tonight at about 9:30 and Its my friend George hes had a SS camaro since the middle of the summer time and hes been having a boner to race with a G35. So I call my friend at work (CDW Airport) and ask him if theres heavy traffic at Bravo West (empty tiedown area) He told me no, So we meet up and rolled into the airport.

Our first run was from a 10 mph roll. I put the car into slapstick turn off the VDC,AC and Radio. And turn on my Speed Pulse on my alpine screen. We went on the 3 beep and we dropped the pedals. The G35 screamed ahead getting ahead of the camero by about a car. I was soooo surprised that the car could even hold up vs a 320HP monster that the SS is. Until about 100-110MPH the G35 kept trucking but the SS started to move up at those speed but the race ended before he could pass me.

The second run was from a stop. So I held the brake and rev to 2,500RPMs and once again dropped it. The G35 fired off the line and once again got off to a real quick lead. blowing by him till about 70-85MPH thats when he started to get close and by the end the race was to close to call. After that we hung out and let the cars cool off, chilled and watch the planes land for about 30 minutes and then we left.. proof that that G35s are nasty off the line, but american sports cars are great at high speeds.

Good account of your G adventure. You are indeed fortunate to have a place like that to open up your G.

I don't doubt the outcomes of the races, so congrats. Now the bad news, your friend can't drive. The 01 SS F-bodies put down about 310whp/320wtq (regardless of tranny) and weigh 3,400lbs. That means they're making about 80whp/100wtq more than a coupe and they weigh about 80lbs less. I too have put the hurt on poorly driven LS1 F-bodies at the track, but I know for a fact my cars weren't quicker. I beat the driver. An auto or 6MT LS1 F-Body is an easy [email protected] car. In a good driver's hands, it's a [email protected]+mph car......stock. A coupe 5AT is a 14.2 second car at best. Big difference.

I agree with DaveB on this one, congrats on the wins though. What you should have done is swap cars, and then you could have have shown him what a crappy driver he is. I like knowing who the better driver is more than knowing whose car is faster.

Plus those motors were underrated.

yeah, they dyno at at least 300 HP to the wheels stock - they were basically the 350 HP vette engines, rated at 320.

Either there is something really wrong with his car or he really sucks at driving, but he is at least 1 second faster than you in the quarter and probably has at least a good 7-8 mph trap speed on you - which is huge.

Another thing, I cut 2.0 60fts with my 04 gto A4, on stock all season tires. I know it is not an SS, but in theory, an SS should do better. It puts down more WHP stock (GTO's Independent rear saps more power than the live axel in the F-body), and the F-body is lighter. The LS1 is not by any means slow down low, it is a beast all over the powerband. I never see G's cutting anything less than a 2.2 60ft.

Last week I raced a friend in his SRT4, and another coworker in his 02 TA WS6(basically the same as the SS).

The guy in the WS6 had never been the the strip before, and he was nervous as hell. He only ran three times, once against me, and twice against the guy in the SRT4.

In his first run, he just dropped the clutch and shot out of the hole. He had a 2.1xx 60. I mean his first run ever. He had no idea how to stage, what rpms to run, whether to drop the clutch or feather, anything. He just took off. That particular run he beat me by 4 tenths, in the 1/8th mile.

His second two runs, against the SRT4, were almost dead even, until the last bit of the 1/8th. However, both those times he forgot and left his traction on, which just sapped his launches.

Anyway, with a little more experience, he's gonna be dangerous in that car. I still can't believe he got a 2.1 on his first run ever.

For comparison, on my last run of the night, I got a 2.19 60'. That was my 10th run, and I have had 8 runs previously in my life. So it took me 18 runs to BARELY get into the 2.1's. Astonishing.

His car is a auto and before he drove this car he had like a 92 Prelude FWD. Right now he has NO CLUE how to launch with a RWD auto car. I will admit he is a noobie when it comes to draging.

Well then, keep making him your biatch

FYI, typically the auto F-Bodies are the quickest in the 1/4 mile. The 6MT have more legs and higher trap speeds, but they're much harder to launch. The 98% of the quickest (11s and below) F-Bodies in the country are autos. It only takes about $3,000 is well selected NA parts to take a 99+ auto LS1 F-body in the 11s. It takes a lot more money and a prayer to do it in the 6MT F-Body.

Well, My friend in Jersey has a high 12 second Z28.....

It has I/E/Manifold.... thats it, also its 6MT

We raced ALOT back when I lived there. From a dig we were dead even (but look at my mods before you think I'm stock) and in 4th he would pull.... hard.

G35 6MT vs AT Fbodies is an eaiser race due to 6 short gears vs 4 tall gears (even with all that tourque). I did a couple 0-120 and 40-120 runs with a newer AT WS6 awhile back (not sure of his mods, atleast an exhaust) and I can tell you this. Normal shifting, because of the fact that they stay in gear THAT much longer, they will pull a hair when you shift. I noticed that and started power shifting (or speed shifting as some of the newer gen. refers to it) and it was a 100% dead even race. If I was in a RHD car, we could shook hands through out the whole race. The 6MT (fbody) has a 4th gear of 1:1. Once they hit the "magic gear" as most fbody enthusiats refer to it as, they are plain and simply out. Any 1st to 5th gear runs I did with my friends, my gears last about .5-1 second less than his and 4th gear, he puts about 2 cars on me JUST from 4th. The LS1 is a mod happy engine. The more air ya give it, the more it goes. If your compairing AT to AT I would imagine it being about the same due to the G's great auto tranny.

The 98% of the quickest (11s and below) F-Bodies in the country are autos.
^ very true, however, the fastest one in the country is a 6MT. It just comes down to whos at the wheel.
