Brakes Which brake pads/rotors to buy for my G35 coupe?

Hi all,

I have a 2004 Infiniti G35 coupe. This past weekend I got the passenger front rim changed (the earlier rim got bent due to a pothole on the freeway).

2 days after the rim change I started hearing a rather loud screeching noise from the same wheel. I took it back to the mechanic and he said that the brake pad has completely worn out (which is rather strange cos before I left the car with him for the rim replacement, everything seemed ok). Anyways, he said it's so bad that even the rotors are gone and I will have to replace them too. His quote was a whopping $500 to change the brake pads + rotors!

So I am here writing for some advice on this forum. I have a couple of questions:
1. I checked some brake pads prices online for 2004 Infiniti and they range from $20 to about $120. So I am totally confused which one to get. (The wheels on my car is 18" if that makes a difference). Someone told me that I should only put the most expensive Brembo brake pads on my car. Anything else will screw it up. Is that true?

2. How do I figure out myself if the rotors need to be replaced? I somehow don't trust that mechanic.

3. Any suggestions about the rotor brands/places to buy, etc.?

Any other helpful advice will be much appreciated.

if car doesn't shake when you brake, then there is nothing wrong with your rotors. they may need to be resurfaced instead. sounds like the mechanic doesn't know what he's doing or he's a crook...

I like the OEM Brembo pads for the Brembo coupe - they work well in all temps and resist fade for most driving conditions, unless you are tracking the car. I have autocrossed on them with no problems. They are about $140 from the dealer.

As for rotors, I like the Centric Premium rotors, which are about $67/rotor from Rockauto.com. Very high quality and built to tight tolerances, and Stoptech uses them as the basis for their drilled/slotted rotors.
